Alabama Tandem Weekend, Registration Now Open

Overview

Alabama Tandem Weekend (ATW) returns this year to Huntsville, AL, the weekend of April 20-23, 2017, for three days of riding around the town known as the “Rocket City” and home to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. ATW 2017 begins Thursday night, April 20, 2017, with a reception at the Space and Rocket Center. Rides on Friday start in historic Mooresville, AL, one of the oldest towns in Alabama and location of the oldest operating post office in Alabama. Rides on Saturday go through Hayes Nature Preserve out to Guntersville Dam on the Tennessee River. ATW 2017 concludes Sunday morning with a ride through NASA Marshall Space Flight Center to see the Redstone Rocket Test Stand which was used to develop and test fire the Redstone missile, the first missile used to denote a nuclear weapon and the Mercury-Redstone launch vehicle which carried the first American astronaut Alan Shepard into space.

Registration

Registration is open online at imAthlete through April 6, 2017 at http://www.imathlete.com/events/ATW2017 and is limited to the first 40 teams to register. The registration fee is $50 per team. Registration does not include lodging, meals or travel costs. No refunds will be issued after April 6, 2017. Refunds will be assessed a $15 processing fee.

Click the orange REGISTER button on the right of the screen. Do NOT click on the “I am registering someone other than myself” box. Check the two waiver boxes and put your initials in to electronically sign the waiver (this applies for all members of your team).  After you check the boxes and sign the waiver, hit CONTINUE to the next page. Fill out all of the participant information. CONTINUE to the next page. Click on the orange CHECKOUT button. Enter your credit card information and and hit the orange SUBMIT ORDER button underneath your credit card info.  You must hit SUBMIT ORDER to complete your registration. You should receive a confirmation email with your receipt from imAthlete later the same day.

Lodging

A limited number of rooms are available at the brand new TownePlace Suites Huntsville/West Redstone Gateway, 6500 Redstone Gateway, Huntsville, AL 35808, at the ATW 2017 discounted rate of $89 per night plus tax. The rate includes a hot breakfast buffet and is available to ATW 2017 attendees through April 6, 2017. Camping is available nearby at the Space and Rocket Center RV Park (http://www.spacecamp.com/travel/rvpark). The RV Park is located at 1 Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805, which is about 5 minutes from the host hotel. Camping is also available at Monte Sano State Park (http://www.alapark.com/monte-sano-state-park), 5105 Nolen Ave., Huntsville, AL 35801, which is 20-25 minutes from the host hotel.

The Davidson Center offers a truly unique setting showcasing NASA and Marshall Space Flight Center (MFSC) contributions space exploration. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the German Biergarten featuring authentic German cuisine, as well as domestic and imported beers and wines. The Davidson Center is located at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center at One Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805, which is about 5 minutes from the host hotel.

6:30 a.m.               Hotel Breakfast Buffet Opens

The rides start at Southern Carnage Bike Shop located at the Mooresville Mercantile, 5081 Mooresville Rd, Mooresville, AL 35649, which is about 15 minutes from the host hotel. Park in the grass in front of the shop.

8:50 a.m.               Riders Meeting

9:00 a.m.               Ride Start

There are three route options, 38, 55 and 69 miles, through the towns of Mooresville and Athens, with the longer option traveling out to Elkmont.

5:15-5:30 p.m.       Gather in hotel lobby to join a group for dinner

The rides start at Hampton Cove Elementary School, 261 Old Hwy 431, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763, which is 20-25 minutes from the host hotel. Park in school parking lot.

8:50 a.m.               Riders Meeting

9:00 a.m.               Ride Start

There are three route options, 30, 49 and 60 miles, through the town of New Market, with the longer options traveling out to Guntersville Dam on the Tennessee River.

5:15-5:30 p.m.       Gather in hotel lobby to join a group for dinner

The ride starts at the host hotel, TownePlace Suites,6500 Redstone Gateway Southwest, Huntsville, AL 35808.

8:30 a.m.               Ride Start

There is one route option on Sunday, 31 miles, through NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S. Army Redstone Arsenal. All riders must have a valid driver’s license with them to present at the security checkpoint. Please notify the event host in advance of the ride on Sunday if you are not a US Citizen. Resident aliens or non-US Citizens must have valid passport or resident card to present at the security checkpoint.

11:30 a.m.             Lunch at Panera Bread (at Bridge Street)

12:00 p.m.             Hotel Check Out Time

Ride/Route Info

Copies of cue sheets and route maps will be available at the hospitality room at the host hotel, as well as the Riders Meeting each day.

The roads will NOT be marked. Riders can download course files for their GPS-enabled bike computers and smart phones from the ATW 2017 event page at https://ridewithgps.com/events/29711-alabama-tandem-weekend-atw-2017.

Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase at the convenience stores designated as rest stops along the routes. Some of the stores do NOT accept credit cards, so make sure to bring cash with you. We encourage you to patron the stores if you make use of their restrooms.

SAG support will be provided each day to assist with minor mechanical problems and to transport riders and bikes if necessary. Contact info for the SAG driver will be provided prior to the ride each day during the Riders Meeting.

All riders are expected to obey all traffic laws. In the State of Alabama, persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable and shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. For your safety and others maintain control of your bicycle at all times (no texting!). When passing other riders, stay in the right lane and call out “passing”.

Things to See and Do

Bridge Street Town Centre (http://www.bridgestreethuntsville.com) is outdoor shopping centering featuring 70 shops and movie theater. Bridge Street is located at 365 The Bridge St #106, Huntsville, AL 35806, which is 5 minutes from the host hotel.

Burritt on the Mountain (http://www.burrittonthemountain.com) is a unique historic park that sits on top of Monte Sano Mountain, overlooking the city of Huntsville. You’ll find several restored 19th century homes, a barnyard, and other exhibits showcasing rural farm life in the area between 1800 and 1900. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 per person. Burritt on the Mountain is located at 3101 Burritt Drive Southeast, Huntsville, AL 35801, which is about 25 minutes from the host hotel.

The Huntsville Museum of Art (www.hsvmuseum.org). The museum collection is comprised of over 3,000 objects, primarily focused on 19th and 20th century American art. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is $10 per person. The museum is located in Big Spring Park in downtown Huntsville at 300 Church St SW, Huntsville, AL 35801, which is about 20 minutes from the host hotel.

Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment (www.lowemill.net) is America’s largest independent center for the arts with over 120 working artists, small businesses, restaurants, and live performance venues. Lowe Mill is located near downtown Huntsville at 2211 Seminole Dr. SW, Huntsville, AL 35805, which is about 15 minutes from the host hotel.

Spring Fest (http://www.tangledstringstudios.com/springfest) is a local music and craft beer festival on April 21 and 22, 2017, hosted by Tangled Strings Studios and Yellowhammer Brewing There will be numerous food trucks and craft vendors each day. Gates are open from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Advance tickets can be purchased online for $25 for one day or $40 for both days (per person). Spring Fest is being held at Campus 805, 2610 Clinton Ave W, Huntsville, AL 35805, which is about 15 minutes from the host hotel.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center (www.rocketcenter.com) is the largest spaceflight museum in the world. Featured exhibits include America’s first satellite, Explorer I, the Apollo 16 Command Module, the Saturn V Moon Rocket, and Pathfinder, the world’s only full-stack space shuttle display. Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $23 per person (Note: Admission is free admission for Active Military and card holders of Smithsonian Affiliate Reciprocal Membership Program). The Space and Rocket Center is located at One Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805, which is a 20-25 min drive from either the host hotel or campground at Monte Sano State Park.

Dining

Belle Chevre Cheese Shop and Tasting Room (http://www.bellechevre.com) features artisan goat cheeses, sandwiches, cheese cake and ice cream all made from the local creamery. Cremery tours are also available. Belle Chevre is located at 18849 Upper Fort Hampton Road, Elkmont, AL 35620, which is along the 69-mile route on Friday’s ride.

Bridge Street Town Centre (http://www.bridgestreethuntsville.com) is outdoor shopping centering featuring a number of full-service restaurants, including: BJ’s Brewhouse, Bar Louie, Kona Grill, BRAVO Cucina Italiana, Texas de Brazil, P.F. Chang’s and more. Bridge Street is located at 365 The Bridge St #106, Huntsville, AL 35806, which is 5 minutes from the host hotel.

Java is the coffee shop the local cyclist stop for a cup of joe. Java serves coffees, teas, pastries and desserts. It is located at 25062 North St, Mooresville, AL 35649, near the start/finish location for the rides on Friday.

Rocket City Tavern (http://rocketcitytavern.com) is full bar serving appetizers, sandwiches, salads and selection of entrees. Rocket City Tavern is located within walking distance of TownePlace Suites at 2100 Rideout Road SW, Huntsville, AL  35808. Rocket City Tavern is open Thursdays until 9 p.m. and Fridays until 10 p.m. It is closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Rosie’s Mexican Cantina (https://www.rosiesmexicancantina.com) is a local favorite for fresh Mexican dishes. Rosie’s is located at 6196 University Dr NW, Huntsville, AL 35806, which is about 10 minutes from the host hotel.

Village Café (http://www.village-café.com) features coffee, teas, sandwiches, smoothies and ice cream. It is located at 317 Old Hwy 431, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763, near the entrance to Hampton Cove Elementary, the start/finish location for the rides on Saturday.
