Ok, ok…. We were O-fer Two this weekend for organized ride attendance.
We blew-off Saturday’s Beautiful Backroads Century (BBC) up in Cartersville, Georgia after doing a weather check at 5:00am and realizing that without a doubt, it would be a wet ride. So, we slept-in (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) and knew we’d made the right call when the rain started falling around 8:00am… about the same time as the BBC ride start. Looking at the weather radar, it looked like it was rather wet up in Cartersville so it was nice being all toasty, warm and dry doing some things around the house. On the bright side, the BBC had 1,100 registered riders and purportedly had a pretty good turn-out despite the rain: win-win for everyone!
We also opted to pass on today’s PEACHES Ride over in Tucker, Georgia after once again doing a weather check: it wasn’t raining, but it was 58°F, foggy and damp. However, it looked like the weather would improve around 11:00am, so we decided we’d just do a ride from the house after the sun came out and the temps moved above 60°F. Our apologies to John & Mitzi and the other intrepid members of the Tandem Club of Georgia who hopefully had a good ride this morning.
Around 10:30am the sun broke through the clouds and we decided we’d hit the road around 11:00am. That gave me about 20 minutes to do a quick tire change on the Calfee, as I wanted to go back to a new set of Vredstein Fortezzas to backwards compare to the Schwalbe Ultremo’s we’d been riding since Sept 8th. More on that in another blog entry that will follow this one.
When 11:00am rolled-around we did, in fact, have lovely blue skies with just a few wispy white clouds and the temps were around 66°F, which meant no need for arm warmers!
The ride was as about as nice as we could have asked for! The motorists were all considerate, we saw at least six other cyclists, the sun was warm and we felt pretty good, having gotten the weeknight rides in on Tuesday & Thursday. While we certainly missed not being out with friends at the PEACHES ride on the other side of Atlanta, there’s just something pretty awesome about being able to just jump on the bike and get in a nice ride from the house vs. losing a couple of hours to a drive across town and then back.
As it was, we were back at the house before 1:00pm feeling pretty good about our ride and with plenty of time to get in a short motorcycle ride, have some lunch and still take care of the weekend honey-do’s that were still on our lists. So, after getting cleaned up we jumped on the Road King and headed over to Loco Willy’s for some wings on the outside patio and all the 1:00pm football games on their six LCD big screen TVs. The usual suspects were at the patio bar, the beer was cold, the wings were hot and so was my lunch date! We easily spent an hour enjoying our lunch before heading out to run an errand before heading home where yard work, laundry, grocery shopping and a few other chores were waiting.
Just a great day!
