20th Anniversary: 9 Day, 2-Up Pedal & Power Trek or a Cruise???

As our 20th anniversary approaches we have a 9-day window over the 4th of July week when Debbie will be able to take some time off.  Otherwise, it’s a dry stretch until the Southern Tandem Rally in the fall.

We had originally thought about heading to the Pacific Northwest & doing a tour de bike shop from Seattle to San Jose, making stops at places like R&E/Rodriguez, Elliott Bay/Davidson, Co-Motion Cycles and Calfee Design while getting in some cycling… or maybe just doing the trip on a rented Harley.  It’s about 900 miles so the motorcycle might be the better choice for efficiency.  Regardless, it would be a week filled with a few road trips.

There was of course the idea of a cruise. Perhaps flying down for a quick 4-day cruise out of Miami, then renting a Road King for a quick trip back down the Overseas Highway to Key West for Friday & Saturday before riding back to Miami and catching a flight home? I’ve never been on a cruise, so I’m not sure if I’d go stir crazy or enjoy the down time.  We’re not into heavy eating, but we do enjoy being together and making the most out of the nightlife.

What’s actually churning in my head right now is perhaps a series of short road trips with the bicycle and motorcycle in tow for a two-day stop in Chattanooga for a ride up Lookout Mountain and then down into the valley, some motorcycle riding and nightlife over the weekend before heading east to the Smokey Mountains for some of the same: a little cycling and motorcycling and some fine dining.  Next, over to Asheville, NC for… you guessed it: a day of cycling and a day of motorcycling.  Perhaps one more stop to visit a friend on Saturday before heading home Sunday.

Debbie was pretty stoked about a short cruise with a return visit to Key West, but she’s never gotten her passport, so that’s something she’d have to take care of pronto.  It’s been on her to-do list since 2002!!

Hmmmmm.  Decisions, decisions.

About TG

I've been around a bit and done a few things, have a couple kids and a few grandkids. I tend to be curmudgeonly, matter-of-fact and not predisposed to self-serving chit-chat. Thankfully, my wife's as nice as can be otherwise we'd have no friends. My interests are somewhat eclectic, but whose aren't?

C’mon…you’ve taken us on bike trips of both kinds and even on a tour of your garage,
breezeway, yard and local restaurants….time for a boat! Besides Debbie wants to
    try that, so…

She’s done the cruise thing, pre me… I was a day-sailor who used to race Hobie Cats and take 25′ – 39′ yachts for short cruises in the Pacific.

It’s up to my sweetie… hard to know which way she’ll go. Heck, just staying at home for a week and pretending to be retired is an option that she also liked! Get out and ride every day, take an afternoon motorcycle ride to a lunch or dinner destination for 9 days in a row: boy, that’d be interesting!!

      We’ll see.

Retirement has been the best “cruise” we’ve been on!
