Another Tandem Rear-Ended & Stoker Killed: Casa Grande, AZ

Sadly, the tandem community has lost another friend, this time in Casa Grande, Arizona.

According to new accounts, Brian (46) & Pam (47) Pangburn were riding their recumbent tandem north on Trekell Road in Casa Grande, Arizona on Tuesday morning and just before 9:30am a 1994 Chrysler Town & Country mini-van driven by J.B. Gore (86) of Arizona City, struck them from behind… despite the Pangburn’s use of a rear strobing tail light.

Pam Pangburn suffered severe chest & head injuries and was transported to Casa Grande Medical Center where she passed four hours after the collision.  Brian Pangburn suffered substantial chest injures and was flown by air to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. His condition is not known.

J.B. Gore did not show signs of impairment at the scene and consented to give blood for testing.

I’d like to say I’m stunned, but sadly enough…  this is becoming a familiar story.  Our thoughts go out to the Pangburn’s family and friends as they deal with this awful family tragedy.  As always, if any further details become available we will share them with readers.

About TG

I've been around a bit and done a few things, have a couple kids and a few grandkids. I tend to be curmudgeonly, matter-of-fact and not predisposed to self-serving chit-chat. Thankfully, my wife's as nice as can be otherwise we'd have no friends. My interests are somewhat eclectic, but whose aren't?

These incidents make a pretty strong case for doing more off-road riding. That sport is not without its hazards, but being hit from the rear by a vehicle is not one of them. There are so many “impaired” drivers out there and we are so vulnerable. I guess to some folks, bicycles are just another annoyance on the road, like deer and squirrels.
