As a reminder, snippets are usually small items either related to our tandem cycling activities that don’t warrant their own blog entry OR our other activities and interests which may be unrelated to tandem cycling and that also don’t warrant their own blog entry.
Facebook: I absolutely suck at Facebook (period). I even posted an apology on my wall at FB last week because I’m just that bad at it. I’m never quite sure where you’re supposed to post stuff: my FB page, friend’s FB pages, Favorite’s pages, photos, messages, etc. I’m an SUCH a troglodyte when it comes to social anything, networking included.
Tandem Cycling: WooHoo, we made it out Saturday for a nice little 22-mile ride from the house. Nothing too dramatic, just a late morning ride so we could say we rode. Actually, Debbie was a real trooper last week and got out on her single bike four-days straight. She did the shorter loops and may have to lay off this week as all the kids go back to school starting tomorrow. Traffic is always abysmal when school’s in session, and especially so during the first few weeks.
The Calfee Still Rocks: We were reminded on Saturday that our Calfee tandem still rocks our world. The ride qualities remain sublime and with our rear shifting all sorted out vis-a-via a SRAM rear derailleur, we have absolutely no complaints. I still need to update our Calfee Journal with an epilogue to close out a few items but anything that’s not good or great is merely a nit. Heck, even our Topolino wheels have been performing well this year, with nary a squeak, creak, or need for a second truing. it was also a small boost to our self-esteem when we happened upon a couple sharp-looking roadies on our Saturday ride who immediately recognized our Calfee tandem for what it was, as both of the young men were riding pretty nice kits but knew of and spoke highly of the Calfee bikes.
Bicycle Bash Yes, STR No: As noted earlier tonight, the Dancing Bear Inn’s Bicycle Bash Weekend is definitely on our dance card for September. However, it looks like we’ll have to pass on the Southern Tandem Rally over in Raleigh, NC. Neither Debbie nor my schedules are lining up to allow us the time we need on the front-end of the weekend to make it work. This is heartbreaking as this will be only the second STR we’ve missed since going to our first STR in 1998. Coincidentally, the only other one we missed was in Greensboro, NC. We’re bummed…
First M/C Poker-Run & Fund Raiser Event: Our friends Deb & David invited us to join them for a Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk fund-raiser on Sunday, August 14th and it was a blast. Apparently standard fare for motorcycle (M/C) gatherings, the event was a Poker-Run that launched from a Bar in Dallas, Georgia and sent us en mass on a 60-mile loop ride that stopped at a couple popular biker-bars, an American Legion post, a printing shop, and a motorcycle apparel and accessory shop. The ride returned to the starting point and concluded with a raffle, cash to the best & worst poker hands, and an amazing live band called Vertigo Swirl. I’m guessing there were about 50 motorcycles, all told, and it was an impressive sight to see when we were all strung-out through the first stoplights. We had a great time, met some great new friends — even met a good old friend from cycling — and continue to be very happy with how well dialed-in our H-D FXDWG “Wide Glide” has become. Of course, the dialing-in process can be both very consuming of your time and resources, i.e., the Harley Tax is pretty steep at times.
Lot’s of changes made to date, such as front springs & rear shocks, saddles, sissy-bar & backrests, all of the controls, headlight. Still to go and in-work are some custom-made, leather saddlebags & an aftermarket “quiet” exhaust system. The saddlebags will take the place of the small roll-bag we threw on for the weekend (and future trips).
