Florida Panther’s Vero Beach Ride Report

Once again we are pleased to share a Florida Panthers Post-Ride Report from our guest contributor Kathy Foster, the Panther’s publicity chair.

The days might be hot for tandeming in Florida now, but at least we can catch an ocean breeze occasionally. More than two dozen Florida Panthers descended on the oceanfront Holiday Inn in Vero Beach for what the club billed as a Weekend Summer’s Ride.

This upscale community has the feel of moneyed Palm Beach with a hint of Old Florida where one- and two-story motels dot the beach, with space in between to see the ocean from the seat of a bicycle.

Saturday morning, we pedaled north along the ocean for 8 miles before turning west to cross the Intracoastal Waterway and explore inland. The only hills on the 53-mile ride were the bridges, which rewarded us at their summits with panoramic views of the water and islets below.

Despite Jimmy Buffet’s dig about “the menu at the Holiday Inn,’’ the motel’s waterfront eatery dished up tasty seafood and innovative salads along with live music for our Saturday dinner. The grand finale was a birthday dessert for Dr. Gabe Mirkin. Of course, it was loaded with whipping cream which Gabe, famous for his sports medicine publications and e-zine, would never eat.

Early Sunday we pedaled south along the ocean for 12 miles, encountering amazingly little traffic on AIA. We returned along a tree-shaded road that felt surprisingly rural despite its proximity to pricey waterfront digs.

The next weekend outing for the Panthers is Aug. 26-28 in Lake Wales, FL. Any tandem rider can join. Details at www.floridatandemclub.org

About TG

I've been around a bit and done a few things, have a couple kids and a few grandkids. I tend to be curmudgeonly, matter-of-fact and not predisposed to self-serving chit-chat. Thankfully, my wife's as nice as can be otherwise we'd have no friends. My interests are somewhat eclectic, but whose aren't?
