Serotta in Sarasota… It’s Baaack!

Long-time, regular readers may recall our friend and Serotta devotee David H. brought an 80’s vintage Serotta tandem to my attention back in November that I chronicled in this blog entry.

I was intrigued back in November, but found the asking price to be a bit steep and the seller — who appeared to be in the bike business — didn’t seem all that motivated to entertain anything less than a full price offer.  So, after taking a deep breath we opted to pass on the Serotta and stock up on indoor training gear, i.e., our Kritler & Inside Ride Emotion rollers + some training programs from Spinervals.  As novel as owning a Serotta tandem might be, the reality was and remains that it would probably be way too short for Debbie, who enjoys her roomy, 30″ stoker compartments.  So, that was that…  Or was it?

Well, now that Spring is in the air, the Bermuda grass has returned from dormancy and the Serotta has returned to Craigslist!  It came back on the Market on March 26th for what appears to be the same asking price that it didn’t fetch in November.  You can find it HERE. Although somewhat tempted — again — I believe I can resist and would be better off looking to fill that 26″ “grand fondo” with something like a second-hand Co-Motion Mocha, Cannondale Los Dos or even a Specialized Deja Two if I can find a genuine classic 650b from Europe.  Or not….

About TG

I've been around a bit and done a few things, have a couple kids and a few grandkids. I tend to be curmudgeonly, matter-of-fact and not predisposed to self-serving chit-chat. Thankfully, my wife's as nice as can be otherwise we'd have no friends. My interests are somewhat eclectic, but whose aren't?

Just go ahead and buy the Serotta. It is old enough to qualify to ride in L’Eroica:

I’m pretty sure I’ve read comments where Ben Serotta may have even admitted or been quoted as saying those early tandems weren’t all that great in the big scheme of things. Heck, in two attempts I couldn’t even get Serotta’s customer service folks to return my Email questions about the tandems… how bad must they have been to warrant the Ostrich effect? Mind you, we’re talking about the 80’s 650B Serotta tandems, not the ones made by David Kirk while he was on staff at Serotta. David didn’t have much to say or any recollection about the “old” Serotta 650B tandems either.

So, I’d really have to go into it as a novelty item purchase and, given how much more $$ it would take to square it away, the juice just ain’t worth the squeeze. $900… a done deal, but not $1,295 with my shallow pockets.

As for the L’Ericia, did you pinch that video from my March 2010 Blog Entry???
