Remember Asphalt Magazine? (Bloggishnish)

Way back in the summer and fall of 2002 it was with great optimism I passed along information regarding the launch of a ‘high concept’, ad-free magazine targeted to road cyclists called Asphalt…

Dec 19(Bicycle Retailer) Asphalt Magazine’s First Issue Is On The Street The first issue of “Asphalt” has now made it into the distribution channels. Read more about the launch at Bicycle Retailer & Industry New’s Web site by clicking HERE. You may recall that http://www.TheTandemLink.com began posting notices regarding Asphalt here in August when they initially launched their Web site with a humorous piece on tandems . Asphalt is a new road cycling magazine co-published by Patrick Brady and Lorraine Daly. Although not dedicated to tandems, based on some of the names that appear on the Web site (e.g., Co-Motion,Erickson Cycle ToursSantanaSeven) there will most certainly be tandem-related content and, according to Patrick, rumor has it a review of the Co-Motion Robusta may be in the works. Oct 01(TTL) Asphalt Magazine Has Gone To Press! The first issue of “Asphalt” has gone to press with a target date for distribution in November. Asphalt is a new road cycling magazine co-published by Patrick Brady and Lorraine Daly. The first quarterly issue includes features on touring in France, the Saturn Development Team, bicycle frame geometry and purchasing a bike, plus three bike reviews. Although not dedicated to tandems, based on some of the names that appear on the Web site (e.g., Co-MotionErickson Cycle ToursSantanaSeven) there will most certainly be tandem-related content and, according to Patrick, rumor has it a review of the Co-Motion Robusta may be in the works. Aug 25(TTL) Is Tandeming For Freds? A new road cycling magazine called “Asphalt” gives Patrick Brady’s perspective on tandems that answers the question, Is Tandeming For Freds? The Asphalt Web site has been a precursor to the printed magazine co-published by Patrick Brady and Lorraine Daly. Interestingly enough, advertisers on the Web site are very familiar names to the tandem scene and include: Co-MotionErickson Cycle ToursSantanaSeven.

The magazine was very well-written, of high-quality, pricey and co-publishers Patrick Brady and Lorraine Daly went to press with their first issue banking on subscription revenue and published 4 editions, perhaps a 5th in 2003-2004 before the enterprise folded.

I stumbled over Patrick Brady’s current, personal writing outlet RedKitPrayer.com today when an article on the 2011 North American Handmade Bicycle Show popped up on my daily Google search engine results.  The writing style was refreshing so I checked the writer bios and that’s when the dots were reconnected.  No tandem content to speak of, aside from a few obscure references to Schwinn tandem handling as a metaphor for some other technical reviews of single bikes or forks.

So, if anyone is looking for some good writing focused on the general aspect of road cycling and racing, this may be a good alternative to the usual stuff you find on the web on in most magazines… unless it’s written by Brady or others of his ilk.

About TG

I've been around a bit and done a few things, have a couple kids and a few grandkids. I tend to be curmudgeonly, matter-of-fact and not predisposed to self-serving chit-chat. Thankfully, my wife's as nice as can be otherwise we'd have no friends. My interests are somewhat eclectic, but whose aren't?
