Just received a cash ‘rebate’ from the good folks who organized the 2010 Southern Tandem Rally!!! What a wonderful and unexpected surprise. We’ve also gotten ‘rebates’ from this past year’s MATES (Mid-Atlantic Tandem EnthusiastS) and ETR (Eastern Tandem Rally) events. I don’t know how often this occurs, but it’s sure a nice post-script to these events in this somewhat turbulent economy.
Now, just to be clear… this should not be seen as a green light for rally organizers to pad their registration fees with an eye towards giving rebates: that just fuels cost growth in rally fees as it does in all other forms of business. The ideal scenario is cost containment such that rally costs don’t become prohibitive and depress participation. After all, even with our STR rebate I believe our two-person, 3 day trip to Florence, Alabama was about a $750 expense once mileage, lodging, meals and the net rally cost were all accounted for. I addressed this cost in my August blog entry entitled, Putting A Price On Tandem Holidays which looked at tandem rally costs along with the wide variety of other tandem holiday options.
At the end of the day, while we really enjoy rallies like STR, TTR and ETR it’s the no-frills rallies like the Alabama Tandem Weekend and other tandem weekend get-aways with friends that really deliver the biggest bang for the buck.
